Sangria. A Refreshing Summer Drink

Sangria is a wine fruit punch that originated from the warm Mediterranean region and started as a summer drink in Spain and Portugal. Today it is one of the most popular drinks worldwide. Unlike many other drinks Sangria is one of the simple pleasures which can be enjoyed in every season and throughout the year.

But, as summer sizzles, when it is hot and muggy, chilled sangria is very refreshing adding to summertime fun.

Sangria has become word’s popular drink since it was introduced to the world at New York World’s trade fair held in 1964. In the New York trade fair, Sangria was served at Spanish world area. It was a huge success there. As it gained more and more popularity and was accepted by people worldwide, Sangria was soon imported under the label Yago Sant’gria.

Traditional sangria is made from Spanish red wine, fresh juices, fruits and soda. In many places they also use white wine to prepare sangria which is known as sangria blanca. The greatest wine region of Spain, Rioja region is the place where Sangria was first made. Red wine mixes well with the fruit and blend of two gives drink a blood red color. Sangria is called so due to its red color, which looks like blood or Sangre when called in Spanish.

The best part about Sangria is it is extremely easy to make in spite of being very exotic sounding and delicious. At first, you have to select your favorite red (or white) wine. Traditional Spanish taste is achieved by using Rioja for your wine. Pour the wine into a large glass pitcher, in which Sangria is served throughout the Spain.

Now, after you have your favorite wine in the pitcher, time to add some fruits. Orange is the standard fruit used in preparation of Sangria all over the Spain. But fruits like lemon, lime, peach and even pineapples can be used to replace it. Key is to slice the fruit into thin pieces, squeeze the juices into the pitcher and then put the pieces in it.

Fruits present in the drink will blend itself with the wine to give the drink a natural juice flavor. If you want to give your drink a sweet taste, you can use sweetener like honey or sugar. Various add-ons like vodka or gin are often used to give the drink an extra kick.

Sangria is always served chilled by adding a lot of ice cubes to it. Soda is added just before serving.
Sangria is available in every bar and restaurant in Spain and for yearlong. Te recipe of Sangria changes from restaurant to restaurant. Every one claims their recipe to be the best.

Sangria is extremely popular in Spain and is now considered as fashionable worldwide. It is replacing alcohols in parties.
